Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE)

[Note: The following information is valid only for academic year 2010-11 and may not apply in subsequent years. Available majors and eligibility criteria may change in years beyond 2010-11.]

The Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) is a program coordinated by the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE). Residents of western states (other than Arizona) may enroll in the ASU WUE program at a tuition rate of 150 percent of Arizona resident tuition plus all applicable fees. Admission to the program is on a space available basis and is competitive.

Availability – Eligibility Requirements

  1. ASU WUE is open to new first-time entering freshman and new transfer students. Community College transfer students must have an associate’s degree or 60 transferable hours [Note: BAS degree programs are only open to students who have an AAS or equivalent degree.] Students must be admitted to the ASU WUE program before their initial matriculation at ASU.
  2. Students must be a permanent resident of Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, or Wyoming.
  3. Students must apply to one of the ASU WUE-eligible majors/programs in New College on the ASU West Campus (see table below).
  4. First-time freshman must have a high school GPA (ABOR GPA*) of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale or have a SAT reasoning score of 1110 (24 ACT) or higher. Transfer students must have an overall GPA of 2.75 or higher on a 4.0 scale in all transferable coursework.
    * ABOR (AZ Board of Regents) GPA is calculated using the 16 core competency courses (English, Math, Lab Science, Social Science, Foreign Language, Fine Arts).
  5. First-time freshmen in the WUE program are required to live in an ASU residence hall during the first year of matriculation. The New College students are required to live in the ASU residence hall within the West campus.
  6. WUE students are not eligible for other ASU non-resident merit-based scholarships or grants such as Sun Devil or Dean's Scholarship, University grant, ASU grant, etc.

Application Procedures

No separate application is required. All applicants meeting eligibility requirements will be automatically considered. Applicants must:

  1. Submit an application for admission including all required supporting documents to the ASU Office of Admissions. Priority dates are March 1st for first-time freshman and June 1st for transfer students.
  2. Indicate an intended major/program in one of the ASU WUE-eligible programs on the admissions application.
  3. Meet all other applicable ASU admission requirements.

Selection Criteria

Students are selected based upon space availability in their selected major/program, GPA, SAT/ACT scores (for first-time freshman), and state residence. WUE students are not eligible for other ASU non-resident merit-based scholarships or grants

Requirements for Maintaining Eligibility

  1. WUE status is available for new first-time freshman for up to four (4) years and for new transfer students for up to five (5) semesters.
  2. Students must maintain continuous full-time enrollment of 12 credits or more per semester and a cumulative institutional GPA of 2.5 or higher. Continuous enrollment is defined as enrollment in both fall and spring semesters. Students not continually enrolled will no longer be eligible for WUE tuition status.
  3. Students must maintain enrollment in an ASU declared WUE-eligible major/program. Students who transfer to a non-WUE major/program will no longer be eligible for WUE tuition status.
  4. Students must remain residents of their home state.
  5. Students cannot apply time accrued while participating in the WUE program to establish Arizona residency.
  6. Violation of the student code of conduct may result in loss of your WUE eligibility

Notification

Students will be notified of their WUE tuition status in writing when they are admitted to the applicable ASU WUE major/program. Students will receive a participation agreement form in the mail to fill out and return to the college. The student will need to sign and send the form (with a proof of out of state residency) back to the participating college. This form will serve as their commitment to the program. Once accepted into WUE, the student’s financial aid budget will be adjusted to reflect the cost of attendance, calculated with the WUE tuition rate.
